Will Screen Printing Ink Wash Out?

Will Screen Printing Ink Wash Out?

One of the most common concerns we hear at Mint Prints is: “Will the ink on my custom shirt wash out?” The short answer is: Not if it’s done right. Let’s break down why.

Screen Printing Inks: Built to Last

Screen printing is renowned for its durability, especially when using high-quality inks and proper curing techniques. Longer lasting than other printing methods such as DTG (Direct-to-Garment) & DTF (Direct-to-Film), screen printing has truly stood the test of time. The two primary types of inks used are Plastisol and Water-Based.

Plastisol Ink

Plastisol ink is a staple in the screen printing industry due to its vibrant colors and longevity. It sits atop the fabric, creating a slightly raised texture. When properly cured—typically at temperatures between 280°F to 320°F—it forms a durable bond that withstands numerous washes without fading or cracking.

Water-Based Ink

Water-based inks penetrate the fabric fibers, resulting in a softer feel and a more breathable print. They require precise curing, often at similar temperatures to plastisol, to ensure longevity. When cured correctly, water-based prints can be just as durable as plastisol prints.

Factors That Can Cause Ink to Wash Out

While both ink types are designed for durability, certain factors can compromise the longevity of your print:

  • Improper Curing: If the ink isn't cured at the correct temperature and duration, it may not adhere properly, leading to premature fading or washing out.
  • Hard Water: High mineral content in water can affect the ink's adhesion, causing it to deteriorate faster during washes.
  • Fibrillation: This occurs when the fabric fibers break through the ink layer, giving the print a faded or fuzzy appearance. Using high-quality inks and garments can mitigate this issue.

Tips to Ensure the Longevity of Your Screen-Printed Garments

To maximize the lifespan of your screen-printed apparel:

  • Follow Care Instructions: Wash garments inside out in cold water and tumble dry on low heat or hang dry.
  • Avoid Harsh Detergents: Use mild detergents to prevent ink degradation.
  • Limit Exposure to High Heat: Avoid ironing directly over the print and refrain from using high-temperature settings in dryers.
